No inverno de 2016 visitei a ilha de São Miguel. A ilha era nevoeiro, horizontes de praias negras, fumo, enxofre e nascentes de água quente, e, à superfície da terra, a natureza aguardava silenciosamente pelo tempo ameno. Não se encontravam hortênsias nem céus azuis, e os dias curtos convidavam as pessoas ao interior. Este dramático contacto com a paisagem vulcânica dos Açores, inspirou-me a realizar uma série de pinturas baseadas nos registos fotográficos que obtive da zona em 2016. Tratam-se de pinturas concebidas com tinta acrílica sobre tela ou metal, onde exploro as tonalidades e alguns jogos perspéticos das vistas obtidas. Procurei traduzir a reconfortante sensação que senti ao deambular pela paisagem da ilha: a presença de uma vida interior invisível e misteriosa, da qual vemos somente vagos vestígios. O sabor do fim – implícito nas manifestações vulcânicas mais violentas - e simultaneamente a promessa da vida. Uma fina superfície adormecida.
In the winter of 2016 I visited the island of São Miguel. The island was fog, horizons of black beaches, smoke, sulfur and springs of hot water, and on the surface of the earth nature waited silently for the mild weather. There were no hydrangeas or blue skies, and the short days invited the people inside. This dramatic contact with the volcanic landscape of the Azores inspired me to make a series of paintings based on the photographic records that I obtained from the area in 2016. They are paintings made with acrylic paint on canvas or metal, where I explore the shades and some sight seeing games. I tried to translate the comforting sensation I felt as I wandered through the landscape of the island: the presence of an invisible and mysterious inner life, of which we see only vague traces. The taste of the end - implicit in the most violent volcanic manifestations - and simultaneously the promise of life. A thin sleeping surface.
